So for my first post I really wanted to do an up-cycle. There is nothing more gratifying than making use out of something someone else would throw away. I hate being wasteful (it is one of my biggest pet peeves) and we had lots of left over doors just sitting in our basement from the renovations. I was searching Pinterest to find some way to use them when I came across Liz Marie Blog and her DIY Door Bathroom Shelf.
So next I picked a door (if you don't have one I've seen them at thrift stores, antique stores and on craigslist). I knew I wanted one with decent hardware because I planned to re-finish that as well.
Then I went to Home Depot and Target and got all of the supplies I needed.
1 - 1x10x6 (which I had cut right at Home Depot to 2 @ 28")
1 - 1" x 4" Galvanized Pipe
1- 1" Galvanized Base Plate
1 - 1" 90 Degree Galvanized Elbow
1 5/8 Wood Screws (to attach the brackets to the door)
8 x 1/2 in. Wood Screws (to attach the shelf to the bracket)
Minwax Dark Walnut Stain
Bright White Paint
Rust-Oleum Antique Bronze Metallic Spray Paint
2 - 4 Packs of L Brackets
1 Plug in Pendant (I got mine at Target)
To get started I removed the hardware and sanded down the door so that the paint would adhere better. Then I had Josh drill a hole big enough for the plug to fit through at the top of the door. Next, I did two coats of white paint on the door and two coats of spray paint on the hardware, and here's what they looked like...
While those were drying I stained the shelves with Minwax's Dark Walnut Stain (I did sand the shelves before I stained them to make sure they were smooth). Next I got a little help from Josh. He mounted the face plate over the hole he had drilled. Then we added the L brackets for the shelves and put the hardware back on.
Then we strung the light through and connected all the pipes together...
Finally we screwed the shelves to the brackets.
Isn't she pretty? Next comes my favorite part...Decorating!

I love the character of this door and I love that it was an original piece from the house! Hope you guys like it!
